Gerry Spence

Gerry Spence

Gerry Spence born, raised, and educated in Wyoming, Gerry Spence has lived in small Wyoming towns all of his life. He is a consummate country lawyer. Yet from these rural places he has conducted a national law practice and has tried and won some of America's most famous cases, including the defense of Imelda Marcos, Idaho separatist Randy Weaver, and the renowned Karen Silkwood case, in which the jury awarded his client a verdict in excess of $10 million.

The Silkwood case elevated Spence to national prominence, and since then he has gone on to obtain a series of multimillion-dollar verdicts for individuals or small companies against large corporate interests. Spence did not lose a jury case after 1969.

Spence's court work has changed the face of trial law in America. He has not lost a criminal case in his entire career of over forty years and he has not been denied by a jury in a civil case in the past twenty-five years. For over a quarter-century, Spence has refused to represent banks, insurance companies, big business, and, unless, as in the Imelda Marcos case, there are overshadowing public issues, he also refuses to represent the rich and famous.

Spence, the author of nine books, is an accomplished photographer, painter, and television host and commentator. He is the founder of Trial Lawyer's College, a nonprofit school, where he and the nation's leading trial lawyers teach young trial lawyers how to win against government and larger corporations on behalf of the individual. He is also the founder of Lawyers and Advocates for Wyoming, a public interest law firm devoted to public interest cases. His agenda: to promote justice in America for the "little guy" and to make the American justice system for the "average citizen."
